COBLESKILL, N.Y. (NEWS10) – The Cobleskill Police Department arrested a man they say drove to his DWI hearing under the influence.
Police say as Hal Bruhns, 24, of Cobleskill, was going through security at the courthouse for a prior DWI arrest, an officer noticed a strong odor of alcohol on his breath and other signs of intoxication.
After investigating, police arrested and charged Bruhns with driving while intoxicated and operating an uninspected vehicle.
Bruhns was released to his attorney and is due back in court in June.
I’m not a lawyer, and I’ve never claimed to be. I did consider going to law school, but then decided that I’d like a job after I graduate and couldn’t take another second of school. I will say however, that I think this counts as double jeopardy, right? Once you get slapped with a DWI, you can’t get another until after your court appearance for the first one, right? So you can show up drunk to your arraignment for the first DWI, right? No? That isn’t right? Well like I said, I’m not a lawyer.
Traffic court is the absolute worst place on earth beside maybe the DMV, which is just all the same people as traffic court before anyone’s been arrested. It’s like purgatory where the best case scenario is that you lost 4 hours of your life waiting in line to be reprimanded by a white haired old man in a nightgown. I propose that we do away with traffic court all together. Have cops carry a credit card reader, or just let me Venmo them on the spot. It’s 2016 and I can’t Venmo the police to avoid showing up to an appointment in person…what’s wrong with that scenario? You tell me.
